Remi Wolf & slimdan at The Greek Theatre: Review

By: Sarah Hyun

Remi Wolf, the Palo Alto-raised indie artist well known for her critically acclaimed album “Juno” and her blend of funk, soul, and pop, recently wrapped up her “Big Ideas Tour” with a second-to-last show at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Joined by songwriter-producer slimdan, the two put on a night to remember.

Opening the night was alternative-folk artist slimdan, who has gained popularity across TikTok for his witty songwriting and relatable lyrics. Singing songs like “Problem Solver,” “Drank on Accutane,” and “Foreverish,” from his debut album, “Second Dinner,” he put on a memorable set as he delivered comedic lines such as “Why do they call them apartments? They’re more like togetherpiles. Why do they call it jetski? It looks like a boatercycle.”

After slimdan’s set, Remi Wolf entered the stage with a presence that could be literally felt — she radiated coolness and confidence in a way I have never before witnessed in another artist. She opened the night with “Cherries & Cream,” “Cinderella,” and “Pitiful,” from her Big Ideas album, swishing her hair on the stage, kicking her feet up into the air, making hysterical faces at the crowd, and interacting with excited fans. Even after the first track, concertgoers were moshing and dancing about with huge smiles on their faces.

Aside from her stage presence, Wolf is a phenomenal vocalist. Her buttery tone, expansive range, and satisfying rasp come together in a beautiful mix. It’s incredible how much control she has over her voice — she belted so many high notes in such a short span of time that I could only wonder how her voice was still intact after performing almost every night. During “Liz,” one of her earlier songs about her best friend from college, Remi sang a breathtaking rendition that was raspy, powerful, and heartfelt. Liz, spotted in the crowd, screamed back in excitement as Remi gave her a shoutout.

As a current USC student in the music industry program, seeing her—a fellow alum—have a genuinely great time performing with her bandmates on such an iconic stage was so inspiring. Even if you’ve never listened to Remi’s music, the amount of energy she puts into her show is enough to create an exciting night for anyone. Towards the end of the night, she asked a fellow fan for a word to use in an improvised song. The fan chose the word, “smooch,” and she created a song on the spot about wanting to be kissed. I was lucky enough to win two VIP tickets through slimdan’s team where I met him and Remi Wolf at the Greek Theatre’s Redwood Deck afterparty. For my first time at the Greek, it was definitely a show I won’t forget!

Although Remi just wrapped up her North American leg of tour, she is sure to come back in the near future. If given the opportunity, attend one of Remi’s shows! You will not regret it.
